For classified-type ads, personally I have had the most success with craigslist. Certain types of ads seem to work there more than others (i.e., format your ad with an image, colors, fonts, etc. rather than just plain text, and include a link to your website).
I would also recommend Google Base as a free advertising site - there are always plenty of real estate listings when I search there.
Another avenue you may want to pursue is local online advertising - sites such as Yahoo! Local, or Google Small Business Center allow you to establish profiles (with links to your site) that are searched.
One last suggestion I would make is to consider networking sites such as LinkedIn or Naymz - profiles created there are search-friendly and may help you get found more easily.
